A US forum analyzed Chinese AI platform DeepSeek but it needs American technology while officials worry that China may not develop AGI independently.

The US government advisory panel questioned DeepSeek chatbot during its Thursday session because of its dependence on American technological components while discussing China's AI development potential. A discussion at the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC) hearing generating concerns regarding China's prospects to rule artificial general intelligence (AGI) as well as the effects on worldwide competition.

The R1 bot of DeepSeek requires its popular chatbot to depend on American-made semiconductors which include government-saved chips according to Hanna Dohmen from Georgetown University's Centre for Security and Emerging Technology. After running out of their stockpiles China will face an increasing deficit of sophisticated AI chips according to her statement. She admitted that Chinese scientists would attempt to work around export restrictions by applying chiplet packaging and algorithmic optimization techniques to overcome limitations.

AI capabilities in China form a key element of discussion during the meeting. According to David Lin from the Special Competitive Studies Project China demonstrates "iterator" behavior rather than the typical "imitator" pattern as it excels at advancing and speeding up existing models such as DeepSeek’s R1.

DeepSeek’s achievements caused experts to worry about China potentially leading the development of Autonomous General Intelligence while also raising economic and political consequences.
