APWEN encourages Nigerian engineers to use environmental sustainability in the projects, emphasizing climate-sensitive designs, renewable energy and sustainable development policy.

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has urged engineers to incorporate environmental sustainability in their designs and processes to fight climate change, pollution, and resource depletion.

In a lecture to a general audience, titled Sustainability in the Climate Change Backdrop: Life Cycle Assessment of Manufacturing and Domestic Processes, APWEN President Dr. Adebisi Osim emphasized the importance and role of engineers as stewards of the future. She emphasized that the engineering decisions contribute directly to the sustainability of society, forcing the professionals to reconsider methods other than the traditional construction and design.

This forum was held in Benin City and it saw the participation of experts such as Dr. John Labiran, Dr. Odunware Okusun of the University of Benin and the technical leaders of APWEN. The themes of the discussions focused on innovative solutions, the implementation of renewable energy, and policies to minimize environmental costs and stimulate environmental sustainability in industries and communities.

Dr. Osim noted the need to implement advocacy, mentoring and research partnerships to embrace climate-conscious solutions. She encouraged the engineers to think of the environmental impact of all the projects, including the infrastructure development and the digital systems.

According to Osim, environmental sustainability is not an abstract concept but a day-to-day decision to conserve the planet for future generations.

The lecture strengthened APWEN's desire to enable Nigeria in the process of progressive development by ensuring that it is eco-friendly in the way it solves engineering problems in practical ways.
