Due to data security concerns and the ongoing tensions between Washington and Beijing, more government-affiliated venues, such as meeting halls and exhibition centers, are restricting entry for Tesla drivers in China.
Since last year, an increasing number of government affiliates, local government organizations, highway operators, and even cultural and exhibition centers have prohibited Tesla automobiles from entering their properties, according to sources who spoke with Nikkei Asia. These limitations used to be mostly applied to military installations.
Tesla enjoys a significant market share in China, but local competitors are becoming more formidable; in the final quarter of 2023, BYD surpassed the American corporation in terms of global unit sales.
Additionally, citing security risks, Tesla drivers on Weibo have shared notices from various local agencies in the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Hubei stating that their vehicles are prohibited from entering certain areas.
Tesla's data security gained attention in China last summer when an airport in Yueyang, Hunan Province, refused to let Tesla cars enter. The airport claimed that the car's "sentry mode," which lets owners keep an eye out for suspicious activity and record the footage, might reveal private information about the surrounding area's topography and landscape.
In August 2023, Tesla launched a local data center in an attempt to allay Chinese concerns about data security. By ensuring that "all data generated by vehicles sold in China will be stored locally," this action allays fears of possible data leaks. Additionally, Tesla played down the security threats associated with its sentry mode, pointing out that the data it gathers is saved locally on a USB drive and cannot be accessed remotely.
Both China and the United States are concentrating a great deal of attention on the "security issues" related to connected cars, telecom infrastructure, and electronic devices.
