Eagle Produce requested a voluntary recall of 6,500 cantaloupes through a total of 19 states and Washington, D.C. because of a potential salmonella contamination.
Due to a possible salmonella infection, Eagle Produce requested a voluntary recall of a total of 6,500 instances of contaminated cantaloupes in nineteen states and Washington, D.C.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tested cantaloupe in a distribution hub, and the FDA's findings prompted the company to start the recall.
According to the FDA, the recalled whole cantaloupes from the Kandy brand include the UPC code 4050 and the lot numbers 797901, 797900, and 804918. Various supermarkets across the multiple states in the US distributed them between September 5 and September 16.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the bacteria salmonella can result in serious and occasionally deadly infections in young children, persons with compromised immune systems, fragile or elderly adults, and people with damaged immune systems.
Salmonella bacterium can cause salmonellosis, which manifests as fever, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, some of which may be bloody. According to the CDC, symptoms usually appear six hours to six days after infection, though some people may not exhibit symptoms for weeks.
Children under five, those over 65, those with compromised immune systems, and pregnant women are at the most risk for serious infection, according to the CDC.
As of Wednesday, the FDA reported that no illnesses had been reported.
