French winemakers in the famous Bordeaux region face uncertain future

The French wine-producing region of Bordeaux is facing a huge challenge as it undergoes a massive transformation.

Extreme weather and shifting customer habits are wreaking havoc on winemakers, making it impossible for some to keep their wineries open. Instead, some people are removing vines and suing the government for compensation.

Bordeaux will probably have fewer vines in five years, according to Sylvie Courselle, an enologist and agricultural engineer at Château Thieuley.

According to local government data, there were 584 requests for compensation from winemakers who wanted to either fully stop production or diversify the use of their land between early June and July of this year. This equates to about 5,000 hectares (12,350 acres) of vineyard land that could be changing hands. The producers had until mid-July to request assistance.

Courselle noted that climate change can hasten this, noting that winemakers have recently had to contend with hailstorms, frosts, and droughts that had a significant impact on the crop.

However, the challenges extend beyond climate change. Historically, Bordeaux has been known for its red wine production, but consumers are increasingly turning to lager and lighter wines. The increase in the number of active brewers in France is evidence of this. According to Statista, these have increased from 322 in 2009 to 2,500 in 2021.

France is also selling less wine overseas. Along with Spain and Italy, France dominates the global wine trade. According to the International Organization of Vine and Wine, France's exports will fall 5% in 2022 compared to the previous year.
