Raw oysters and clams that are part of a norovirus outbreak are being warned against by California health officials, who advise consumers to consult with a healthcare provider if symptoms persist.

The California Department of Health (CDPH) and Los Angeles Public Health Department have now provided information to assist consumers in taking caution against raw oysters and raw clams harvested in certain areas such as British Columbia, Canada and Pickering Passage, Washington, for fear of a norovirus outbreak. Related Cases with growing numbers in California associated with these shellfish.

There have been 57 confirmed and probable cases reported to date of norovirus infection among those who consumed raw oysters from British Columbia at various California restaurants: between December 1 and 9, 2024. Those who became ill reported eating the raw oysters from British Columbia during this period.

The contaminated shellfish may include the following: oysters with certain landfill numbers from British Columbia (BC 14-8, BC 15-4), and harvested from Rudy's Shellfish between November 15 and December 11. It could be marketed as Fanny Bay, Buckley Bay, or Royal Miyagi Oysters.

Health experts are calling for the removal of these shellfish from restaurant and retail sales due to their potential contamination. This virus has a very high contagious rate and translates to the following: fever, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, body aches, and cramping in the stomach. These symptoms typically begin within 12 to 48 hours of consuming infected food.

The advice on curtailing consumption is for any consumer who does not feel well, especially with the prolonged symptoms or severe fatigue. CDPH is also assembling a health consultation if symptoms last longer than three days or if one is unable to keep food down. Such incidences show how, within the healthcare sector, food safety has been emphasized to avoid such outbreaks.
