Awareness sessions on Global Recycling Day operate within Johannesburg for raising recycling and waste management understanding as well as resolving landfill problems while establishing sustainable waste solutions.
Under the City of Johannesburg Waste Management and Regulation Unit which operates within the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) stakeholders will collaborate to support recycling and waste management initiatives during Global Recycling Day on March 18, 2025.
The program teaches businesses people and governmental officials about recycling and waste management because these practices drive sustainability. The information-sharing sessions will focus on three essential matters which include how recycling supports circular economy principles along with innovative waste management techniques and top methods for waste disposal.
Makhosazana Mtshali as Director of Waste Management and Regulation highlighted that waste challenges need an accelerated solution. Johannesburg generates over 1.4 million tonnes of waste per year while its landfill space continues to diminish until it may become fully depleted within five years according to Ms. Makhosazana Mtshali.
Johannesburg proceeds with developing new waste treatment technologies while completing the amendments to the 2022 Waste Regulation By-laws. The problem of illegal dumping together with growing waste volumes continues to challenge authorities whose aim is to boost public awareness about recycling practices.
The current Global Recycling Day focuses on community-based sustainable waste management efforts that support Johannesburg’s goal of achieving a greener future.
