A Vision Born in Faith: The Founding of AICS
In 1997, a small but determined group in Western Sydney dared to dream of a school that would nurture both the minds and souls of young Muslims. The Australian Islamic College of Sydney (AICS), then called King Abdul Aziz Primary School, opened its doors with just 33 students from Kindergarten to Year 4. Its vision was bold yet simple: to provide a holistic education that wove together academic excellence and Islamic values, serving the needs of the local Muslim community.
The early days were far from easy. Operating out of two aging demountable buildings, AICS faced a litany of challenges—sparse facilities, limited funding, and regulatory obstacles. Yet, the spirit of the community held firm. Volunteer board members and local supporters poured their hearts into the fledgling school, ensuring its survival through sheer dedication and shared purpose.
Over time, the school transformed, adopting the name AICS to reflect its growing ambitions. From those modest beginnings, it expanded to offer education from Kindergarten to Year 12, embracing a diverse student body representing around 25 language and ethnic groups. Today, AICS stands as a pillar of academic and Islamic excellence, committed to shaping responsible, faith-driven citizens who contribute meaningfully to their community and the wider Australian society.

Islamic Studies teachers and staff serve as role models, offering support as young Muslims navigate life in a multicultural Australian context. Special events — from Ramadan observances and Eid celebrations to Quran competitions — create joyful, memorable experiences that deepen students’ connection to their Islamic heritage.

Muhammad Shahzad Idrees: Pioneering Excellence in Education
The AICS Chairman, Mr. Muhammad Shahzad Idrees, in collaboration with the Principal, plays a pivotal role in steering the strategic vision of the College and ensuring its sustained growth across academic, personal, and spiritual domains. Under his leadership, AICS has adopted a high-level School Development Plan grounded in measurable goals and collective accountability. Strategic initiatives include the creation of Subject Leader roles to drive academic excellence through Band 6 skill mapping, the integration of cognitive and non-cognitive competencies for holistic student development, and targeted cultural reforms to enhance staff retention and student outcomes.
Notably, the Chairman and Principal have placed strong emphasis on internal process improvement (e.g., digitization, efficiency gains, and clearer reporting protocols), staff onboarding and training, and professional culture-building through reflective leadership—all of which align with Islamic principles of accountability (mas'ooliyyah) and resourcefulness (hinkah).
