At CIO Bulletin, we had the distinct honor of interviewing Lasse Moilanen, Founder and CEO of BioSO4 Oy. He shared significant insights on how his company’s research-driven mindset and commitment to responsible chemistry are reshaping mineral extraction and raising the bar for sustainable innovation across the sector.
Below is an Excerpt from the Interview
Can you share the story behind BioSO4 Oy’s inception and what led you to focus on high-purity mining reagents, shaping the company’s unique trajectory?
BioSO4 Oy was born out of a vision to revolutionize the mining industry’s approach to flotation reagents. Our background in chemical engineering and environmental science recognized a critical gap in the availability of high-purity flotation chemicals that could meet both performance and sustainability standards. The company was established in 2017 with a mission to develop flotation chemicals that optimize mineral separation processes and minimize ecological impact. This dual focus has shaped BioSO4’s trajectory, positioning us as a pioneer in clean chemistry for mining.
Could you elaborate on the innovative analytical methods your team has developed for Xanthate quality and environmental residue testing?
Our R&D team has developed proprietary analytical protocols that allow for ultra-precise quantification of Xanthate purity and degradation byproducts. These methods include advanced chromatography and spectrometry techniques tailored to detect trace residues in both product and environmental samples.
We also use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology to thoroughly analyze organic materials in different parts of the process, such as concentrates, waste, environmental water, and tailings. NMR lets us see and measure each reagent, its impurities, and its breakdown products with great clarity. By correlating the concentrations of organic compounds with metal recovery rates, we can optimize the dosing of each reagent and assess the feasibility of closing water circuits. This level of insight supports both environmental compliance and process efficiency. We’ve also implemented real-time monitoring systems that help clients track reagent performance and environmental dispersion, ensuring alignment with increasingly stringent regulations.
BioSO4 is known for its environmentally responsible solutions. How do your products balance operational efficiency with environmental stewardship?
We believe that environmental responsibility should never come at the cost of operational performance. Our reagents are designed to work really well in separating minerals while also being safe for the environment, as they can break down naturally or be reused. For instance, our high-purity Xanthate formulations offer excellent flotation efficiency with significantly reduced aquatic toxicity.
A key global strength of BioSO4 lies in our deep expertise and robust international capabilities in flotation chemistry. Our team collectively holds over 100 years of experience in flotation reagents, grinding chemistry, and process optimization. Our long-term partnerships with global reagent producers and flotation process developers ensure that our solutions consistently meet the latest industry standards. Our door-to-door logistics model guarantees reliable delivery worldwide, and our European-manufactured chemicals offer unmatched purity and traceability.
This combination of technical depth, supply chain reliability, and environmental focus makes BioSO4 a trusted partner for mining operations across the globe. By integrating life-cycle analysis into product development, we ensure that every reagent contributes to both profitability and sustainability.
How does BioSO4’s collaboration with global research institutions enhance your ability to deliver cutting-edge solutions for mining projects?
Collaboration is at the heart of our innovation strategy. We partner with leading universities and research centers across Europe, North America, and Asia to co-develop technologies and validate our products in diverse geological settings. These partnerships have enabled us to stay ahead of industry trends, access breakthrough research, and rapidly prototype new solutions. Our joint projects often result in peer-reviewed publications and patents, reinforcing our credibility and scientific rigor.
BioSO4 actively helps repurpose surplus or expired reagents. How does this circular approach impact both the environment and industry economics?
Our circular chemistry program is a game-changer. We’ve developed processes to recondition or repurpose surplus reagents, turning potential waste into valuable inputs. This reduces landfill use and lowers the carbon footprint of mining operations. Economically, it helps clients cut costs by recovering usable materials and avoiding disposal fees. In 2024 alone, we helped recover over 300 tons of reagents across client sites, translating into millions in savings and measurable environmental benefits. Many of these recovered reagents are part of our European supply chain, reinforcing our commitment to regional sustainability and reliability.
Your services extend beyond supplying reagents to process design and development. How does this integrated approach benefit your customers?
Mining operations are complex ecosystems, and reagent performance is deeply tied to process design. By providing a complete range of services—from choosing the right reagents to designing processes and testing—we make sure our solutions are tailored to each client's specific ore and operational needs. This holistic approach reduces trial-and-error, shortens ramp-up times, and improves overall recovery rates. Clients appreciate having a single partner who understands both the chemistry and the engineering. Our European-manufactured reagents play a central role in this integration, offering consistent quality and traceability throughout the process lifecycle.
Could you discuss a recent example where BioSO4’s solutions resolved a significant mining reagent challenge for a client?
One of the most impactful collaborations in our history has been our long-term involvement in one of Europe’s largest mining projects, which is currently in its early development phase. BioSO4 has supported the project for several years, contributing to chemical strategies, water circuit closure, and reagent optimization.
Our Head of Product Development and co-owner, Janne Kankkunen, has played a key role in designing the chemical processes and developing sustainable water circulation systems from the ground up. Along with Product Manager Katja Pasma, we conducted a comprehensive value-chain analysis for all reagents planned for use in the project. Logistics Manager, Terhi Talvela, carried out an in-depth logistics study to ensure efficient and low-impact delivery systems. Many other BioSO4 team members have also contributed to various aspects of the concentrator design.
Together, we’ve helped the project achieve significant chemical savings and optimize dosing protocols to levels far lower than before BioSO4 joined the initiative. The reagents used in the optimization process are primarily manufactured in Europe, supporting both regional industry and sustainability goals.
Being featured in Innovators of the Year 2025 is recognition of transformative impact. What does this honor signify for BioSO4’s journey and future ambitions?
This recognition is both humbling and energizing. It validates our belief that innovation and sustainability can coexist in heavy industry. For BioSO4, it marks a milestone in our journey—from a niche startup to a global influencer in mining chemistry. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our product portfolio into rare earth and battery metal extraction and to deepen our impact through digital tools and AI-driven reagent optimization. Our continued focus on European manufacturing ensures that our solutions remain dependable, clean, and future-ready.
