Axel Springer secures the ‘North Star’ of British journalism to build a global powerhouse for center-right media.
Axel Springer, a German family-owned media group, announced the closing of a deal to buy The Telegraph Media Group (TMG) for £575 Million on March 6. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and controlling shareholder of Axel Springer, Mathias Döpfner, led the deal with his concerted efforts in taking over TMG’s operations. Importantly, the company first bought the security rights connected to The Telegraph. This would later change to complete ownership control over the publication of the iconic Daily Telegraph newspaper and its Sunday sister paper, both in print for over 171 years since 1885. The deal has caught many industry observers unaware, coming in the wake of a previously announced takeover plan by the owner of Daily Mail and General Trust, Jonathan Hamsworth, 4th Viscount Rothermere, being stalled over media-diversity concerns.
The acquisition is said to offer benefits to both parties in the transaction: The TMG’s integrity as a heritage media brand will be preserved alongwith the exciting prospect of tapping into new readership in other regions, while Axel Springer would amplify its brand positioning in alignment with The Telegraph’s core values. CEO Dopfner emphasizes this confidence by highlighting the brand’s need to succeed financially for maintaining its editorial independence. In his words, “We are aware that the amazing journalists and employees at TMG have been operating in an extended period of uncertainty. That is never easy. We want to bring that uncertainty to an end as soon as we can and welcome you into Axel Springer.”
The latest development marks Ariel Springer’s success in fulfilling founder Springer’s goal of acquiring The Telegraph, described as the ‘North Star’. This follows after a similar attempt in 2004 that did not materialize. With this, the company seeks to become the leading center-right media outlet in the English-speaking world, apart from making significant inroads in other territories. Both TMG and Ariel Springer are expecting to receive the go-ahead in upcoming discussions over the next few weeks with the Department of Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) and other concerned stakeholders.
