Jann Wenner, co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine, was dismissed from the board of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation after making remarks about women and black artists.
After receiving harsh criticism for remarks he made about women and black musicians in an interview with the New York Times that was published on Friday, Jann Wenner, co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine, was dismissed from the board of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.
A representative from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation officially stated on Sunday that Jann Wenner is no longer a member of the board of directors.
Wenner spoke with The New York Times about his most recent book, "The Masters," which features conversations he had with well-known musicians while running Rolling Stone magazine, including the legendary Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon.
During the interview, he talked about why he decided not to interview any black or female performers; his remarks on the matter received strong criticism.
In the interview, he talks about including people who met certain criteria according to him, stating that it was also based on his personal love for them. He further added that no woman or black artist was articulate enough to reach a level of intelligence that he considered good enough to be included in the book.
After a significant amount of backlash, Wenner wholeheartedly apologized for his remarks in a statement through Little, Brown and Company, publishers.
Wenner co-founded the music publication Rolling Stone magazine in 1967 with Ralph J. Gleason. The storied rock magazine was put up for sale in 2017. He was personally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, as well as being a co-founder of the same.
