Microsoft withdraws the planned Exchange Online rate limit following the enterprise reaction to workflow interruption issues.
Microsoft has permanently withdrawn its intended Mailbox External Recipient Rate Limit on Exchange Online, which is an attempt to control spam and unauthenticated bulk emails. The relocation decision comes after a prolonged reaction by the enterprise customers, who reported operational interference and non-congruence with the current workflows.
The limit suggested was aimed at curbing mailbox-scale external email by limiting abuse on the side of spam email campaigns and line-of-business applications. Nonetheless, Microsoft had recognized that the control posed a lot of problems to legitimate organizations that use volume email distribution to conduct important business communication.
In a statement, Microsoft announced that existing bulk-sending features of the Exchange Online cannot be adjusted to enterprise needs, and hence the move was to suspend the implementation. The firm emphasized the importance of customer feedback in the center of focus, which can be attributed to the fact that Microsoft has been keen on balancing the security of the platform with the ability to use it in the real world.
The cancellation does not eliminate other safeguards. Exchange Online will also maintain their recipient rate limits and tenant-level external recipient controls, which place diminished restrictive boundaries on email usage.
Microsoft will not blanket limit, but smarter and more adaptive mechanisms will be pursued to deal with email abuse. They will be supposed to be more based on machine learning and behavior analysis to identify suspicious patterns without legitimate bulk operation.
In the case of enterprises, the decision will alleviate the short-run loads, especially on marketing, notification, and customer communication systems. Simultaneously, Microsoft has also affirmed that its larger security goals have not been altered, and further instructions on bulk email best practices should be anticipated in its strategy development.
