A $100 million US-backed paramilitary unit is set to protect the world’s most vital mineral supplies, aiming to end years of instability and illicit trade.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is stepping up to protect its most valuable treasures. The government is launching an elite paramilitary "mining guard" to establish robust mining security across its mineral-rich provinces. This specialized unit arrives at a critical time, as the world looks to the region for the materials needed to power the green energy revolution.
Supported by a $100 million investment from the United States and the United Arab Emirates, this initiative seeks to secure the entire supply chain, from the deep earth of the mines to the transport trucks on the road. For the first time, a dedicated force of 20,000 trained guards will be deployed to ensure that the wealth of DR Congo mining benefits the nation rather than rebel factions.
This strategic move is more than just a defense play; it’s a commitment to global transparency. By cleaning up the sector, the DRC is making it safer for international partners to invest in cobalt, copper, and lithium, minerals essential for everything from electric car batteries to advanced defense tech.
“President Felix Tshisekedi aims to clean up the entire mining sector by eliminating practices that run counter to good governance and transparency,” stated Rafael Kabengele, the Inspector General of Mines.
As reported by CIO Bulletin, the first contingent of these specialized guards is expected to hit the ground by December. This bold step marks a turning point for the DRC, transforming a "troubled" region into a secure, professional powerhouse for the global tech industry.
