New Jersey awards $16.2 million through grant money to enhance waste management and recycling operations throughout its municipalities. Through the Recycling Enhancement Act the state provides funding to improve existing programs and develop collection methods while supporting reduction programs.

Recycling performance determines how the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) distributes funds to municipalities obtained through a $3-per-ton trash disposal fee. Shawn M. LaTourette who leads the DEP highlighted recycling because it helps save resources and reduces pollution as it maintains sustainable communities.

Municipalities received their grant amounts for 2022 based on their reported recycling numbers from last year as Newark received $407,126 and Vineland received $661,250 together with Jersey City receiving $338,457. Money from this funding will be used to improve infrastructures and run educational programs and establish better waste management plans.

The Department of Environmental Protection shows New Jersey produced 21.2 million tons of waste during 2022 and recycled 54% of this total. Solid waste recycling in municipal settings registered a minor boost to reach 38% overall as New Jersey continuously improves its waste management strategy.
