Germany Studies Aesthetics in Renewable Energy Planning

Germany considers the role of aesthetics in the planning of renewable energy, weighing the view of the people, the environment, and the costs of solar and wind projects.

Germany is undertaking an investigation into how the community's or society's understanding of beauty relates to the development of renewable energy. As it has expanded, solar and offshore wind have gotten larger, but not fast enough to keep up with the climate goals of the Paris Agreement.

The scholars conducted an experiment as to whether installing wind turbines and solar farms out of view of congested and scenic locations would scale back resistance. This solution was identified as having the effect of reducing public opposition to renewable energy systems, but it will also impose a 38 percent cost increase on these systems by 2045.

The number of rooftop solar panels would have to expand 18 times in Germany to reach hidden installations, posing a challenge of 29 GW of new infrastructure a year. This is way ahead of the existing rate of 7.5 GW annually. Offshore wind growth would be necessary, which can give rise to unforeseen effects on the environment.

The analysis indicated that the most economically viable compromise involves avoiding only the most scenic and heavily populated areas, rather than concealing all renewable energy projects. Dynamic planning that adapts to the region can balance cost, acceptability, and environmental concerns.

The case of Germany emphasizes a bigger challenge in the world: the larger scale of renewable energy without losing the community and the cost.
