Renewable Energy Transforms Assam’s Remote Island Schools

The island schools of Assam are embracing solar energy and electric rickshaws, and they are all powered by renewable energy to accommodate digital learning, mobility and sustainable development of the community.

A silent revolution is sweeping across the remote river island schools of Assam with the help of the renewable energy solutions. The renewable electricity is now a dependable source of electricity through solar panels and this has made digital classrooms in which power is frequently intermittent. Educators remark that the audiovisual learning that operates through solar systems would help keep the students more active and would also enhance the classroom atmosphere with fans and filtered water.

The UDISE+ 2023-24 data released by the Ministry of Education indicates that there are more than 3,000 solar-powered government schools in Assam. However, there are a lot more institutions that rely on untrusted grid connections that stop digitallessons in case of floods or regular outages. The Assam Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2025, on renewable energy initiatives will focus on increasing off-grid solar systems in schools, healthcare and community areas.

Outside the classrooms, electric rickshaws, which are also another alternative energy source, are enhancing transportation of teachers and students in the islands. These e-rickshaws guarantee safe and affordable last-mile transportation, especially among women teachers, and provide livelihood to the young people in the area.

The experts note that decentralized renewable energy systems have greater resilience to climate disasters in such climate-prone areas as the Brahmaputra Valley in Assam, which will bring long-term benefits to the community. Nonetheless, there is still a problem of traffic jams and the uncontrolled development of e-rickshaws.

The move towards solar energy and electric vehicles indicates a wider move by Assam to synchronize education, clean energy, and sustainable transport, making renewable energy a foundation of universal development in rural India.
