Google Cloud Highlights AI’s Role in Security Challenges

Google Cloud cautions that security risk is on the increase in Asia-Pacific, insisting on AI-enabled defense, human management, and post-quantum cryptography developments.

Google experts at its headquarters in Singapore emphasized the necessity to implement more effective security controls due to the increase in cyber threats in the Asia-Pacific region. Mark Johnston, Director of Google Cloud Office of the CISO, disclosed that 69 percent of the breaches in Japan and the immediate area are identified by outsiders as opposed to organizations themselves, highlighting the ongoing vulnerabilities.

In an address at the symposium Cybersecurity in the AI Era, Johnston set out how AI is transforming security. Whereas AI reinforces defense by detecting threats in real-time, it also provides those with hi-tech tools, which he described as the so-called Defender’s Dilemma.

Google Cloud is responding to these issues with projects such as the Project Zero initiative to use big language models to find bugs in code, such as Project Zero's Big Sleep and a filtering tool called Model Armor to keep AI outputs safe and business-friendly. Johnston, however, warned against overdependence on automation, stating that human control is very crucial in security operations.

As attacks and budget constraints escalate, security leaders must adopt cost-effective proactive strategies. Johnston also observed that Google Cloud plans to enter the quantum era with post-quantum cryptography to enhance resilience.

Finally, specialists highlighted that AI-mediated balanced usage coupled with a human touch will be the future of cybersecurity.
