Egypt Launches Ambitious Smart Cities Strategy to Transform Urban Life

People-centered approach aims to drive sustainable growth, innovation, and inclusion across the nation.

Egypt has officially unveiled its Smart Cities Strategy, marking a major milestone in the country’s pursuit of sustainable urban development and modernizing its growth model. The initiative focuses on integrating both existing and new cities into a unified vision that balances technological innovation, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, Manal Awad, described the strategy as a transformative shift in Egypt’s urban planning. She highlighted its focus on addressing rapid urbanization, climate challenges, and spatial equity, while creating new economic opportunities. “The citizen remains at the heart of this strategy,” Awad emphasized, underscoring the importance of community participation in shaping Egypt’s urban future.

The launch event brought together senior government officials, including the Ministers of Housing and Communications, the governors of Cairo and Giza, the Swiss Ambassador, World Bank representatives, real estate developers, and members of parliament.

Unlike earlier urban programs, the Smart Cities Strategy combines the upgrading of existing cities—with improved infrastructure, services, and slum redevelopment—with the development of entirely new, technology-enabled cities designed to meet population growth and encourage innovation. The strategy relies on strong legislation, innovative financing, and scientific planning tools such as the Egyptian Cities Atlas, developed with the World Bank.

Awad stressed that the plan prioritizes adequate housing, safe mobility, quality services, and a healthy environment, aligning with Egypt’s Vision 2030. “Smart cities in Egypt are not just urban projects; they represent a modern, inclusive, and sustainable future for all Egyptians,” she concluded.
