IHS Launches Free Wi-Fi in South African Township

In South Africa, IHS South Africa and Project Isizwe open a free Wi-Fi zone in Durban Township promoting the improvement of access to telecommunications and education.

Telecommunication firm IHS South Africa has teamed up with the non-profit organization Project Isizwe to offer free, uncapped public Wi-Fi in KwaMashu, Durban. The program is supported by a desire to break the digital divide, facilitate education, and empower young people and entrepreneurs by giving them more access to digital resources.

IHS stated that this initiative by telecom is resolving urgent South African concerns where only 79% of people have access to the internet and youth unemployment is over 60 percent. IHS South Africa CEO Sandile Msimango said, "This is not only an internet initiative; it is a community worker initiative, a community empowerment."

Through the initiative, IHS telecom partner Social Coding carried out a five-day skills training program that equipped local youth with skills in mobile application, virtual reality, communication, and technical problem-solving. It will further extend as a robotics showcase in the primary schools.

The telecom industry is also contributing majorly to the democratization of digital tools, particularly in low-asked areas. Project Isizwe was started in 2013 by liaising with ISPs, government, and funders to roll out Wi-Fi hotspots in low-income areas, serving millions of South Africans.

According to IHS, the project is one of the steps towards sustainable digital inclusion and employment. The telecom firm hopes to stimulate local innovation and alleviate inequality by providing the combined internet and technology skills to the communities in which the company operates.
