New voice assistant actions, routine deletion, and longer video downloads put users in full control of their smart home experience
Google has rolled out a major update to the Google Home app, bringing highly requested automation improvements that make managing smart homes simpler and more intuitive. The highlight of the update is the addition of pre-defined voice assistant actions in the automation editor. Users no longer need to type custom commands every time, they can now choose from a curated list of actions, including announcing the time, sharing today’s weather, playing music, podcasts, or radio, and even telling a joke.
“This update is all about giving users more freedom and control,” said Adamya Sharma, reporting for Android Authority. Another key improvement addresses a long-standing user frustration: the inability to delete pre-made routines like Good Morning or Bedtime. With this update, Google Home users can finally remove these default routines, clearing the way for their own custom automations and reducing clutter in the app.
Google has also simplified reporting automation issues. Users can now tap and hold an automation to quickly provide feedback on what went wrong, making troubleshooting faster and more convenient.
On the web side, Google Home now supports continuous video clip downloads of up to five minutes. This ensures that longer camera recordings no longer break into awkward segments, improving usability for security-conscious users.
With these updates, Google is pushing smart home automation closer to being genuinely user-friendly, allowing people to spend less time managing routines and more time enjoying their connected homes.
