carbon neutral requires engines says Toyota Chairman

The chairman of Toyota Motor, Akio Toyoda, disclosed on Friday that the Japanese carmaker has started working on a project to create a new internal combustion engine.

He said that since engines were still a useful tool for reaching net-zero carbon dioxide emissions, or carbon neutrality, they would keep making engines.

The statements were delivered by Toyota's previous CEO and president, Takumi Toyoda, during a speech at Tokyo Auto Salon 2024, the largest gathering of customized cars worldwide. Friday marked the start of the show, which featured sports cars and customized vehicles from both Japanese and foreign manufacturers at Makuhari Messe, a sizable convention facility in Chiba, close to Tokyo.

Toyoda noted that producing engines may look like Toyota is turning back the clock on the trend toward greenhouse gas savings. He went on to add that was never the plan. The engines of the future are essential. The carmaker is encouraging the development of new engines, including a hydrogen-fueled engine that emits no CO2, even if he withheld details of the new initiative.

Toyota debuted a customized Lexus RZ electric car and an adapted GR Yaris sports car at its stand. Other Toyota memorabilia on display includes the iconic AE86 racer and replica Supra parts called "GR Heritage Parts."

In addition to foreign automakers like BYD Auto of China and Hyundai Motor of South Korea, the 42nd Tokyo Auto Salon is open through Sunday. Participating companies include Honda Motor and Nissan Motor.
