After new electric vehicle legislation inducing local manufacturing in India, Tesla is again trying to crack into the country and is negotiating for showrooms in New Delhi and Gurugram.
Tesla is currently looking for showroom locations in New Delhi and its surrounding areas to establish itself in India once again. The electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer's works according to Reuters, early discussions with property giant DLF focused on potential sites including Cyber Hub in Gurugram and DLF Avenue Mall in New Delhi. These delivery and service points are to function as well as customer experience centers.
And the renewed push follows India’s new electric vehicle regulation due to be enforced in March 2024. Substantially incentivizing foreign EV manufacturers, the policy rewards those which meet certain criteria with import duty reductions as low as 15 per cent on cars sold at or above $35,000 – provided they commit to manufacturing at least $500 million worth of cars in the country over the next three years.
As a boost to local automobile manufacturing the Indian government desires to provide added value through global EV brands. Such goals would serve for Tesla to have its interests avoid those results, which is economically and environmentally beneficial.
Tesla’s journey to India hasn’t been smooth sailing. The talks broke down quickly, with Indian authorities refusing to accept negotiations involving reduced import duties in exchange for no long-term manufacturing commitments in the late 2023. However, this new interest in the market is telling that Tesla aims to enter the market with electric car demand in the long term. While the way ahead remains hazy for the company in India, the scenic route appears promising.
