global automaker licenses car grade safety tech including radar and rear cameras to premium electric bicycles

Changes in how the market behaves across the Asian automotive scene have caused European carmakers to rethink their usual corporate setup. Volkswagen, for example, is looking to boost its footprint in the world’s third-largest vehicle market, and it is actively hunting for a local partner in India so it can split the capital burden and speed up the rollouts of fresh models. The German manufacturer is now in advanced talks with the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group about a possible equity stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India. At the same time, rising demand for electric and hybrid platforms is creating additional financial obstacles, especially for foreign brands that run without local manufacturing allies. Strategic priorities pushing this deal forward include:

  • Transferring operational control to a domestic conglomerate capable of navigating local supply chains and regulatory environments.

  • Raising fresh capital to finance the multi-billion Euro "India 3.0" platform expansion covering hybrid and battery electric vehicles.

Corporate Leadership Weighs Strategic Options

Despite two decades of operations and substantial platform investments, Volkswagen and Skoda currently hold under three percent of domestic passenger vehicle sales.

A spokesperson for Skoda Auto Volkswagen India noted, "To fully explore the country's growth potential, we are always considering new business opportunities and are evaluating various options to ensure the best possible solution to implement our strategy".

Mirroring Successful Joint Venture Models Elsewhere

A deal with JSW would mirror Volkswagen's historical blueprint in China, where long-term joint ventures with SAIC Motor and FAW Group unlocked massive volume production. With JSW already holding a stake in MG Motor India, bringing Volkswagen's vehicle architecture under the same industrial umbrella could yield significant supply chain efficiencies. Negotiators from both sides are currently working out company valuations and long-term equity arrangements.

Long-Term Outlook for Domestic Auto Consolidation

Thriving in India's price-sensitive passenger car market requires rapid product localization, flexible manufacturing platforms, and deep capital backing. Sharing equity with an established industrial group gives global brands the operational agility needed to compete with dominant domestic players. CIO Bulletin views this development as a decisive pivot by Volkswagen to trade total ownership for market scale and accelerated electrification.

The Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group is said to be in advanced discussions to acquire a stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, according to reports.

Considering the whole group- Skoda, VW, Audi, and Porsche together- it’s roughly 2.5 percent of the local domestic passenger vehicle market.

Volkswagen earlier had preliminary partnership talks with Mahindra & Mahindra, but those conversations didn’t land on a conclusive joint venture.

A joint venture with JSW is expected to lift capacity utilization at Volkswagen’s current assembly plants in Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
