Morocco Leads the Way with Affordable Cannabis-Based Epilepsy Treatment
Morocco has taken a groundbreaking step in the healthcare industry with the launch of its first cannabis-based epilepsy drug, developed by Pharma 5 Laboratories. This innovative treatment not only offers a lifeline to the country's 400,000 epilepsy patients but also positions Morocco as a key player in the global cannabis market.
Pharma 5, a leader in Moroccan pharmaceuticals, invested MAD 250 million ($25 million) to create a locally made cannabidiol (CBD) medication that is affordable and meets international standards. This new drug is a significant breakthrough, especially compared to the high cost of imported alternatives like "Epidyolex," priced at over MAD 10,000 ($1,000).
Mia Lahlu Filali, General Manager of Pharma 5, highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “This is a huge step in reducing our reliance on expensive imported drugs.” The company has ensured the highest quality production, from eco-friendly cannabis farming to final drug manufacturing.
This milestone is supported by Morocco’s progressive cannabis policies. Legalizing cannabis for medical and industrial purposes has revitalized the sector, with over 3,000 farmers now licensed to cultivate in regions like Chefchaouen and Taounate. Recent reforms, including pardons for 5,000 previously convicted farmers, aim to build a thriving legal market.
Experts estimate Morocco could generate $600 million annually by meeting European cannabis demand, signaling a bright future for the nation's economy and healthcare advancements.
