Geothermal energy added to Port of  Oakland’s clean energy

Geysers Power Company is set to provide geothermal energy to the Port of Oakland, as reported by the Board of Port Commissioners.

According to the Board of Port Commissioners, the Port of Oakland has come to a decision to buy geothermal energy that is worth nearly $13.5 million over the next 12 years. Geothermal is 100% renewable energy that is a clean and reliable source set to be used for the Port's tenants, both at the airport and seaport.

Geysers Power Company facilities, located near Middletown, around 75 miles north of San Francisco, are said to be providing the geothermal energy. The power company is said to be one of the World’s cleanest and biggest geothermal steam fields, with the largest globally known geothermal power plant complex. It has thirteen facilities along the border of Lake County and Sonoma.

Energy that is derived from the heat produced in the earth’s core is known as geothermal power. Naturally occurring steam field reservoirs that are found below the earth’s surface are tapped through wells averaging 8,500 feet in depth. The energy that is harnessed ultimately makes for green, clean, and renewable energy.

The purchase is set to begin at the start of 2025 and last through the end of 2036, costing around $1,125,000 per year on average.

Port Utilities are known to primarily derive their sources of sustainable energy from a range of options that include biomass, geothermal, solar, and wind energy.
