ciobulletin - Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Drives Environmental Sustainability Efforts

The Green Legacy Initiative in Ethiopia maximizes environmental sustainability, ecosystem restoration, increased exports and climate resilience via mass afforestation.

Senior Ethiopian authorities have praised the Green Legacy Initiative (GLI) as having tremendously contributed to the environmental sustainability of the country and resurrection of its economy.

On June 28, in Addis Ababa, Planning and Development Minister Fitsum Assefa said the project can help regenerate ecosystems and increase exports. In more than 6 years, GLI in Ethiopia has already planted over 40 billion seedlings, which has already contributed to an increase in coffee and avocado exports and has resulted in foreign exchange (FE) market earnings.

Peace Minister Mohammed Edris proclaimed it is a gift to the next generation and pointed at its contribution to the well-being and long-term viability of the people. The minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa has also pointed out that the restoration of Lake Haramaya and the minimization of soil erosion are all results of the environmentally fitting initiative.

As they intend to plant an additional 7.5 billion seedlings this year, Ethiopia seeks to keep environmental viability as the centerpiece of the national development strategy.
