First H5N1 Bird Flu Australia case confirmed

Australia confirms first H5N1 bird flu case, raising biosecurity alert and surveillance response.

The first H5N1 bird flu Australia case got confirmed by the agriculture ministry of Australia. It means the highly contagious variant has now reached every continent. In isolated Western Australia, the disease was discovered in a brown skua, a migratory seabird. According to local media, the bird was discovered on a beach in the Cape Le Grand National Park close to the town of Esperance, which is roughly 700 kilometers (434 miles) southeast of Perth.

Australia was the only continent where the H5N1 avian flu virus had not yet been identified. The virus can quickly spread throughout wild bird and poultry populations. There are still very few human cases associated with the disease.

"We all knew we couldn't be bird flu-free forever.”- Julie Collins, Agriculture Minister.

In October of last year, the isolated Australian possessions of Heard and McDonald Islands, which are situated in the southern Indian Ocean, were found to have the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

According to a study published this week, the H5N1 strain of bird flu has killed over 13,000 young seals from a group of 17,000 on Heard Island since last August more than 75% of the total. Additionally, they discovered more penguin deaths than they had anticipated.

Scientists believe that the migrating birds from the roughly 1,800-kilometer-distance French-owned Crozet Islands most likely brought bird flu to the islands last August.

What is H5N1 Flu?

Avian influenza (sometimes known as "bird flu") is caused by the influenza A virus subtype H5N1 (A/H5N1). It is both panzootic (affecting animals of many species over a vast area) and enzootic (preserved in the population) in many bird populations. The A/H5N1 virus can also infect people and other mammals that have come into contact with sick birds; in these situations, the symptoms are often severe or deadly.

CIO Bulletin is of the view that as H5N1 continues to spread throughout the world, this development serves as a reminder of how closely nations are now monitoring avian influenza concerns.
