Just ahead of hosting the UN climate change talk in Dubai, the UAE held a large and important oil and gas conference about “decarbonizing faster together”.
While the sector ramps up output to benefit from higher global energy prices, the Emirati president-designate of the next United Nations COP28 climate meetings urged oil and gas corporations to be at the center of the solution for climate change on Monday.
The appeal by Sultan al-Jaber reveals the disconnect between those who support limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) as opposed to pre-industrial times and those who are skeptical of his business affiliations.
While addressing a significant global issue, he made his remarks at a prominent oil industry event that highlighted the state oil company he is in charge of. This fueled criticism of his appointment while also drawing support from the energy companies he hopes to win over at the upcoming COP28 negotiations beginning in November.
However, he further added that they must ensure human prosperity while doing so, by simultaneously meeting the energy needs of the planets expanding population.
The government-run Abu Dhabi Oil Co., which can pump 4 million barrels of crude oil per day and aspires to reach 5 million barrels per day, is led by al-Jaber as CEO. Additionally, he made the call to the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) conference, which brings together the biggest players in the oil and gas industries each year.
