Sudden speed limits on battlefield terminals disrupt Ukrainian drone missions while Kyiv absorbs another night of Russian missile attacks
Ukrainian forces watched their drone missions slow dramatically this week after sudden restrictions hit Starlink Ukraine terminals used on the battlefield. Officials in Kyiv confirmed that overnight speed limits imposed on the military-grade system left slower attack drones more exposed to Russian air defenses.
Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said SpaceX had placed a 100 mph speed limit on Starlink terminals mounted on drones without prior warning. “Obviously, this action cannot be a coincidence and is connected to the current political situation,” Beskrestnov wrote on social media.
By late Wednesday some connections had improved, with speeds reported around 100 mph. Still, Ukrainian officers said the remaining limits were not enough to safely intercept fast jet-powered Russian drones. Starlink remains essential for long-range strikes, interceptor systems and frontline logistics.
The timing has deepened worries in Kyiv. Ukraine endured a second consecutive night of heavy missile and drone attacks. Five people were killed and dozens wounded in Kyiv alone. Power plants and energy sites were hit hard, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity.
President Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine did not receive the usual early warning before the first wave of ballistic missiles. He later told the world that Russia had “squandered the opportunity for de-escalation” and chosen to continue its war. At the same time, reports of a possible energy truce between the sides remained unclear.
As reported for readers of CIO Bulletin, these developments arrive while US President Donald Trump has publicly criticised Zelenskyy and spoken more warmly of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian officials fear that vital intelligence sharing and access to American satellite systems could weaken further.
Elon Musk stated on X that the military version of Starlink is controlled by the US military and the President. The Pentagon has not yet issued a detailed public response.
Meanwhile Zelenskyy travelled to London seeking continued European backing. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham promised accelerated delivery of air-defence systems and insisted Britain’s support would not change.
On the ground Ukrainian commanders claimed modest gains in the east, while Russia reported shooting down hundreds of Ukrainian drones overnight. The fog of war remains thick, and the sudden limits on Starlink Ukraine have left many asking how secure Kyiv’s most important digital lifeline really is.

Everything you need to know about this news
A sudden speed limit of around 100 mph was applied to military-grade terminals used on drones, causing several missions to lose connection or be cancelled.
Elon Musk said the military version is controlled by the US military and ultimately the US President. Ukrainian officials linked the move to the wider political climate.
It supports long-range drone strikes, interceptor air-defence systems and everyday frontline communications. Many units rely on it daily.
President Zelenskyy said no advance warning came before the first wave of ballistic missiles, though later waves were flagged.
Officially intelligence sharing continues, yet recent public criticism from President Trump and the sudden Starlink limits have raised visible concern in Kyiv.
