Precision formation flying satellites and scientific astronomical solar corona research are some of the uses for which PROBA-3 satellites will go to space via the PSLV-C59 mission of ISRO.
An Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) flight, PSLV-C59/PROBA-3 mission is scheduled to fly from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. ISRO will launch 550kg of satellites in a highly elliptical orbit for the start of a new cycle of space exploration.
In addition, this 'In Orbit Demonstration' mission developed by ISRO with its expertise in High Precision formation flying, jointly with the European Space Agency (ESA), is a demonstration of high precision formation flying in the environment of space. The mission consists of two spacecraft: The Coronagraph Spacecraft (CSC) and the Occulter Spacecraft (OSC) both located in a stacked configuration in their orbit.
However, this launch has been notable for highlighting a continuing evolution in the PSLV vehicle, the vehicle made famous by its reliability and extreme precision in placing payloads in orbit. ISRO noted that the PSLV-C59 mission is part of very significant scientific research. The PROBA-3 satellites, carrying cutting-edge technology, will study the solar corona, the Sun's outermost layer. It will also represent the well-established PSLV, known to be reliable in its payload regulations in making space missions since 1994.
It lifted about 320 tonnes in total mass in the PSLV-C59 mission and is to be a showcase for what better India can do in space, emphasizing such scientific exploration towards their international collaboration. It emphasizes the commitment of ISRO towards advancing space research and meeting global needs regarding the space domain.
