SBS Builds Cisco-Based Media IP Networking Backbone

With the aim of improving media transmission and connectivity, as well as minimizing power consumption of its broadcast base, SBS builds a Cisco network base.

The Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) of Australia is modernizing its broadcasting service infrastructure on the foundation of the Cisco Media IP backbone, which will soon become the core of its data delivery service network.

In the next three years the broadcaster will relocate all the video and audio production systems to the new networking configuration. The solution will combine application and orchestration of best-of-breed architecture, according to SBS, resulting in continuous operations, without viewers being disturbed.

In contrast to the traditional cabling systems like SDI or AES, the latest media IP network transports the video, audio and metadata as data packets over the internet protocols. It is hoped that this networking enhancement will save energy and improve the quality of the picture and connectivity throughout what are known as SBS locations.

SBS has emphasized its use of current networking technologies such as the Catalyst 6000 and new Nexus 9000 switching families by Cisco and other VXLAN to network virtualization. Also identified as key skills that will be critical in future operations are the ones in Cisco DCNM, which is a centralized management system that manages data center networks.

The program highlights the adoption of the networking innovation by the public broadcasters to offer more effective, adaptable, and viable media services.
