The pharmaceutical industry in Jordan increases the scale of production and export and enhances supply in the region and future growth opportunities.
According to a report by the Jordan Chamber of Industry, the pharmaceutical and medical supply industry in Jordan has already attained an annual production capacity of JD 2.2 billion. The industry makes a significant contribution, currently accounting for 11 percent of total industrial production and 51 percent of the manufacturing value added, which highlights the importance of this strategy to the national economy.
The pharmaceutical industry is in 151 establishments and the capital is registered at JD 385 million, and it has over 10,000 employees. Human medicines are the main production drugs that are about 85 percent of the total output, with the veterinary drugs coming second at 12 percent and medical supplies at 3 percent.
The report illustrates that the pharmaceutical and medical supplies industry meets approximately 63 percent of the internal demand, which increased to 66 percent during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its contribution to health safety in the country. There has also been the improvement of export performance, where shipment has increased to JD 471 million in the first nine months, as compared to 2024, which was JD 447 million.
Pharmaceutical exports to Jordanian markets have 85 international destinations. Saudi Arabia is the biggest contributor to total exports, with 24, followed by Iraq at 20, Algeria at 11, and the United States and the UAE at 8.
In the future, the industry can exploit an estimated JD 626 million in potential, specifically in antibiotics, blood fractions, immunological products, and penicillin-based medicines. Analysts observe that long-term investment and innovation can further place Jordan as a regional pharmaceutical manufacturing center.
