The new model does orders-of-magnitude larger than any other image-based AI model existing today, and it will integrate 4M digitized microscope slides of cancer.
Microsoft recently announced collaboration with digital pathology vendor Paige to create the world's largest image-based artificial intelligence model for cancer detection. According to a press release, the AI model is learning from an unparalleled amount of data, including billions of photos. It can detect both common and unusual tumors that are notoriously difficult to diagnose, and researchers hope that it can someday assist doctors who are dealing with staffing shortages and increasing caseloads.
Paige has been striving to automate pathologists' process in order to increase accuracy and efficiency in the field. Paige creates digital and AI-powered solutions for pathologists, who perform lab tests on biological fluids and tissues to make a diagnosis. It's a specialty that frequently works behind the scenes, but it's critical for evaluating a patient's next steps.
According to the business, the new model "does orders-of-magnitude larger than any other image-based AI model existing today," and it will integrate 4M digitized microscope slides of cancer. The New York-based software firm will train the system on Microsoft's (MSFT) supercomputing infrastructure before deploying it internationally on the tech giant's Azure cloud computing platform.
