NASA scientists aim to investigate Saturn’s moon Titan's environment's habitability. The expedition is anticipated to last about three years, and will launch in June 2027.
NASA is getting ready for its upcoming mission, which involves traveling through a moon in Saturn's atmosphere.
NASA said this week that it conducted additional testing in advance of the Dragonfly rotorcraft lander mission, which will explore Titan, the biggest moon of Saturn and the second largest in the solar system.
The expedition, which is anticipated to last about three years, will launch in June 2027 and arrive in the mid-2030s. Its objectives include determining whether or not past or present life exists on the moon and how far prebiotic chemistry has advanced — the study of how organic compounds form.
Titan is special because it is the only moon in space other than Earth that has been shown to have liquid on its surface and the only moon to have a dense atmosphere.
As a component of NASA's New Frontiers Program, Dragonfly is set to gather material samples in various regions in order to investigate the habitability of Titan's environment.
According to NASA, Titan's early environment is comparable to Earth's and could hold secrets about how life first evolved on our planet.
The rotorcraft, which will fly like a drone, is being tested by NASA and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, to make sure it can operate in the unusual environment.
