United Airline resumes flights

On Tuesday, United Airlines announced that it had resumed operations after briefly stopping all flights from American airports due to a system-wide technological issue.

United Airlines announced on Tuesday that it was resuming flights after briefly halting all planes in the United States at their place of departure because of a "system wide technology issue."

Flights have resumed once the technology problem was resolved. United said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that they are working with affected passengers to assist them in getting to their destinations as quickly as possible.

The airline had stated that already-flying aircraft "are continuing to their destination as planned." It didn't provide more information or explain what caused the technological issue.

According to a statement issued to CBS News by the Federal Aviation Administration, United requested that all of its departures across the country be halted. It directed more inquiries to United.

According to data from tracking firm FlightAware, United had only cancelled seven flights by mid-afternoon on Tuesday, which is less than the average of 16 cancellations per day over the Labor Day weekend. 12% of United's scheduled flights were delayed, which is much more than competing carriers American, Delta, and Southwest combined.

Pete Buttigieg, the secretary of transportation, said that the FAA was receiving more details about the origin and extent of the problem and that the DOT would ensure that UA upheld its obligations to the affected passengers. Buttigieg has chastised airlines for flight delays and other problems over the past year.
