GE Vernova to Build Kenya Grid Control Centers

GE Vernova to deploy Enterprise Asset Management in the grid enhancement in Kenya, which will amplify reliability, automation, and efficiency of transmission nationwide.

GE Vernova and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) have joined hands to build a National System Control Center (NSCC) for the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). It also involves the construction of two control rooms in Embakasi and Suswa to boost the monitoring and operation of the national grid. One of the major aspects of such development is the introduction of Next Generation Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems aimed at assisting the performance and efficiency of the grid.

The NSCC will incorporate the recent grid technologies of GE Vernova such as its GridOS software, Advanced Energy Management Systems, and Wide Area Management Systems. The project will focus on Enterprise Asset Management which allows monitoring transmission in real time, automation, and predictive maintenance.

Kenya's goal to attain universal access to electricity by the year 2030 propels this. Enterprise Asset Management will make the infrastructure reliable and sustainable as the demands increase. The technology deployment will be headed by GE Vernova via its French subsidiary Grid Solutions SAS, and civil works, as well as system integration, will be undertaken by L&T.

The French Development Agency and the French Treasury also provide financing for the project, which receives support from the European Union. The Financial Services of GE Vernova took the lead in the structuring of the concessional financing.

The infrastructure investment, an EAM-driven initiative, will be a large milestone in the modernization of the Kenyan power grid that will allow the integration of renewable energy sources and facilitate operational resilience in the long run.
