In copper, cobalt and coal, the metals and mining production was lower, said Glencore, but predicted more than $3.5 billion in trading profits this year.
Glencore conveyed that, as far as its primary metals and mining operations are concerned, copper, cobalt, zinc, nickel, and thermal coal, it registered a lower output for the first three quarters of the year. Nevertheless, the firm restated its outlook that a high end of a trading profit estimate incorporated in its longer term forecast, which is $3.5 billion, could be attainable.
In the metals and minerals division, Glencore’s production of copper fell by 4% to 705,200 metric tons while the volume of cobalt produced, dropped by 18% to 26,500 metric tons. The company has kept the same projection for 2024 production of copper at this level of three quarters of a million tons in light of the forecasts for energy transition applications for copper which remains a key commodity.
Glencore’s trading arm, which incorporates such products such as coal, oil, liquefied natural gas, a section of ferrous metals and ore and other metals previously reported a high profit of $6.4 billion for the year 2022. The firm estimates that for the entire year, marketing EBIT will fall within the hop of about $3 billion-$3.5, almost the top end of its historical expectations.
The firm remains engaged in its coal businesses fully, most recently purchasing Teck Resources’ met coal business and drawing significant interest from investors. Glencore is thermally stable as one of the main producers of thermal coal where production is projected to range 98 million to 106 million tons this year which is a 7% drop compared to last year. Upon acquisitions, steelmaking coal volumes are expected to increase dramatically in 2024.
